Sleep deprivation complicates fat lose and cause weight gain
Sleep deprivation is closely associated with fat accumulation along the belly or waistline and insulin resistance. If you sleep less than four hours per night on regular basis there is a probability of 70% that you will be obese. You will also find it difficult to burn fat to achieve significant weight loss. If your average hours of sleep per night are 5 hours you have a 50 % probability that you will be obese and if your average sleeps hours is 6 hours per night you have a 20% probability of being obese. You should be able to sleep 7 to 8 hours per night for good health.
Many people today belief that sleep deprivation is harmless and regard it as an indication that a person is hard-working.
When you deprive yourself sleep you cause an increase in a substance called grehlin in your blood. Grehlin makes you want to eat more food as it increases your appetite. Therefore during sleep deprivation you will probably eat what you should not have eaten if you were a sleep. In addition to this, lack of enough sleep tends to lower a protein called leptin in the blood. The purpose of this protein is to suppress your appetite. When its levels are low you have great appetite although you do not need to eat. Sleep deprivation in humans appear to create a phony hunger, which is not related to the real need for food.
You can now see the connection between grehlin, leptin, sleep and belly fat. High grehlin and low leptin persuade you to eat more than you should on regular basis. This will end up as extra weight on your waist or belly.
What do people eat at night? The tendency of most people will be to eat carbohydrates during this period of increased appetite.Carbohydrates tend cause weight gain and belly fat accumulation.
If you lack sleep and have a craving for carbohydrates every night you will be in a very unpleasant cycle which you must look for a way to end it.You must end the cycle because each time you eat a muffin, a cookie, a biscuit a slice of bread or drink a cup of coffee or tea or even juice you are adding calories and this will contribute towards the size of your belly fat.You will thus continue to add more weight. The extra weight combined with stress accompanied and inadequate sleep may create many more health issues.
If stress is the cause of your sleep loss you should consider reducing it in your life. Go to the gym and exercise. It will be easier to fall asleep. You could also buy supplements that enhance sleep although we prefer that you exercise.
What causes loss of sleep? There are many causes but the most common is too much stress. A combination of both stress and sleep loss or deprivation has been found to cause weight gain. The weight gain may appear in ladies as fat in the mid section or potbelly in men. As you already know belly fat is a risk factor for heart disease and you should try to eliminate it or reduce it.
If you do not sleep enough occasionally, your health will not necessarily be affected but if it’s a chronic habit it will affect you.
A relationship between sleep deprivation and insulin sensitivity has been demonstrated. People who are sleep deprived have decreased insulin sensitivity. Those who are not sleep deprived have higher insulin sensitivity. If you are sleep deprived you will require more insulin to be secreted into the blood than a normal sleeper for a proper regulation of blood glucose. What this means is that if you are sleep deprived you will require more insulin to be secreted in the blood for you to respond to excess amounts of glucose.
This over burdens your pancreas as it has to produce more insulin than it normally does. It has been shown that sleep deprivation does lead to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is associated with abnormal levels of cholesterol and fats in the blood, obesity hypertension and diabetes.
It appears like sleep derivation could be associated with the obesity observed in among Americans and in countries with similar lifestyles.There is a correlation of obesity with sleep deprivation in the people aged between 25-60.People tend to sleep on average few hours. Because of sleep deprivation the hormones that regulate fat synthesis are increased and those that promote fat degradation are reduced. For example in one study, higher concentrations of insulin were observed during the night than during the day.This was surprising but it could explain how obesity and belly fat are associated with too much dinner on your plate and night time eating.
